HC Deb 12 November 1987 vol 122 c310W
Dr. Godman

To ask the Secretary of State for Defence what is the total civilian work force employed by his Department in Scotland; and what was the corresponding figure for each year since 1980.

Mr. Sainsbury

The number of full-time equivalent civilian staff, excluding casual staff, employed by the Ministry of Defence in Scotland as at 1 October 1987 was 12,258.

Corresponding figures for each year from 1980 to 1986 were:

Number
1 October 1980 19,439
1 October 1981 18,850
1 October 1982 18,430
1 October 1983 18,645
1 October 1984 18,440
1 October 1985 18,162
1 October 1986 18,257

For the purpose of consistency and comparability the above figures exclude personnel employed at royal ordnance factories, which changed from being part of the Ministry of Defence to independent Companies Act status on 2 January 1985.

The reduction in numbers between October 1986 and October 1987 is largely due to the transfer of some 5,700 royal dockyard, Rosyth staff to commercial management on 6 April 1987.
