To ask the Secretary of State for Defence what is the total cost to date of the battlefield artillery target engagement system to Her Majesty's Government.

The total expenditure to date on all phases of the BATES programme is some £130 million at 1987–88 average outturn prices.

To ask the Secretary of State for Defence whether the in-service date for the battlefield artillery target engagement system as specified in the battlefield artillery target engagement system original contract is on schedule; and if he will make a statement.
