HC Deb 04 November 1987 vol 121 c731W
68. Mr. McTaggart

asked the Secretary of State for the Environment when he expects lead-free petrol to be readily and widely available in Britain.

Mr. Moynihan

Encouraging progress is being made. As at 12 October 1987, 519 petrol stations, providing good geographical coverage, were offering unleaded petrol for sale. I expect further rapid expansion, but the precise scale and timing will depend on increasing uptake by the motoring public, and the response of the petrol companies. We are taking a number of measures to encourage motorists to switch to the cleaner fuel.
