asked the Secretary of State for Transport what discussions he has had with the chairman of British Rail in relation to investment in the east coast line.

My right hon. Friend discussed the electrification of the east coast main line with senior board officials when he inspected progress on this important scheme on 15 October last year. I also discussed progress when I travelled with BR officials on the first electric train from Huntington to Kings Cross on 3 November.
