asked the Secretary of State for the Environment what information he has as to what improvement has taken place in the quality of South Yorkshire water courses between 1980 and 1986; and what further improvement he expects by 1990.

In South Yorkshire between 1980 and 1986, some 65 km of canal and river length were reported as being upgraded—nearly half of this having previously been class 4 (bad quality). By 1990, a further 98 km are expected to meet the long-term objective of class 2 (fair) and be capable of supporting reasonably good coarse fisheries. These improvements are the result of investment in improved sewage treatment by Yorkshire water authority and of reductions in industrial effluent.
