§ Mr. WaldegraveIn South Yorkshire between 1980 and 1986, some 65 km of canal and river length were reported as being upgraded—nearly half of this having previously been class 4 (bad quality). By 1990, a further 98 km are expected to meet the long-term objective of class 2 (fair) and be capable of supporting reasonably good coarse fisheries. These improvements are the result of investment in improved sewage treatment by Yorkshire water authority and of reductions in industrial effluent.
