HC Deb 23 July 1987 vol 120 c335W
Mr. Clay

asked the Secretary of State for Employment if he will give the latest figures showing how many women in paid work earned below the national insurance threshold.

Mr. Lee

It is estimated from the latest "New Earnings Survey" results that only about one fifth of 1 per cent. of full-time female employees have gross weekly earnings below the national insurance threshold. The survey results do not cover all part-time employees but, taken with other data, it is estimated that in April 1986 about 2 million female part-time employees in Great Britain had gross weekly earnings below the limit for national insurance purposes.
