asked Her Majesty's Government:

Whether for each of the years 1980 to 1987, they will publish the following figures relating to the recruitment and training of new entrants into the prison service: (a) The planned recruitment levels; (b) The actual recruits trained; and (c) The reasons for any shortfalls; And whether any courses for new entrants over the whole period were cancelled or curtailed in intake as a result of financial restraint.

Planned recruitment levels of prison officers vary in response to changing operational needs. The numbers completing training in the years in question were:
