Mr. Ron Davies

asked the Secretary of State for Wales what arrangements have been made, in accordance with the requirements of section 18(8) of the Agriculture Act 1986, to monitor the effect on wildlife and the landscape of agreements concluded with farmers in the Cambrian mountains environmentally sensitive area; whether he will make details of these arrangements available in the Library; and whether he will make a statement.

The monitoring arrangements of the Cambrian mountains ESA include aerial photography, ground surveys of vegetation and hay meadows and the evaluation of woodland. Discussions with the Nature Conservancy Council are being held on ways for

asked the Secretary of State for Wales (1) in respect of land within environmentally sensitive areas, how many farmers have applied to enter into management agreements in each of these areas, and what is the total area of land involved; and how many agreements have so far been concluded with farmers in each of these areas, and what is the total area of land involved;

(2) if he will give the extent in hectares of the Cambrian mountains environmentally sensitive area, the total area of agricultural land within the environmentally sensitive area, and an estimate of the number of farmers eligible to enter into management agreements in that area.
