HC Deb 20 July 1987 vol 120 cc38-9W
Mr. Amess

asked the Secretary of State for Transport what estimates are available to him of the projected levels of traffic in south-east Essex during the next five years.

Mr. Peter Bottomiey

There are many sources and influencing factors. Essex county council also produces data on the far more extensive network of non-trunk roads. Based on population growth to 1991, traffic in Essex as a whole is expected to increase about 2 per cent. faster than the national average for that period. If my hon. Friend has a specific issue in mind, perhaps he would write to me.

Mr. Amess

asked the Secretary of State for Transport what estimates are available to him of the projected levels of traffic in London during the next five years.

Mr. Peter Bottomley

The Department's road traffic forecasts provide estimates of traffic in London. Forecasts are based on projected changes in demography and income. They indicate that demand could rise between 7 and 15 per cent. above present traffic levels during the next five years. Actual growth in traffic will be limited by the available road capacity.
