HC Deb 20 July 1987 vol 120 cc33-4W
33. Mr. Simon Hughes

asked the Secretary of State for Transport what proposals he has to deal with traffic congestion in London; and if he will make a statement.

Mr. Peter Bottomley

Parts of London suffer from heavy traffic congestion. The White Paper "Safety for Roads in England 1987" (CM. 125) sets out trunk road improvements worth nearly £1 billion in London, as well as studies of areas with severe problems, traffic management schemes and other measures designed to relieve congestion. Major local road schemes costing over £300 million are currently being supported by transport supplementary grant. The Government are supporting investment in efficient and attractive public transport services which carry a large proportion of travellers in London.
