asked the Secretary of State for Transport what percentage of the total mileage of roads built since 1979 forms part of bypasses.

Bypasses and relief roads accounted for nearly 40 per cent. of the total mileage of national roads built between 1 April 1979 and 1 July 1987.

Other road improvements which are not primarily bypasses also relieve communities of traffic.
