HC Deb 20 July 1987 vol 120 c42W
Mr. Woodcock

asked the Secretary of State for Transport what study his Department has made of whether proposals for a Mersey barrage would endanger the future of the Manchester ship canal as a commercial waterway.

Mr. David Mitchell

My Department is in touch with the feasibility study for a barrage through the acting conservator of the River Mersey, who is a member of the technical steering committee. The study will, among other things, make a preliminary assessment of the effects of the proposed barrage on shipping and ports in the estuary.
