HC Deb 15 July 1987 vol 119 c527W
23. Mr. Tony Banks

asked the Secretary of State for the Environment what action he is taking to combat the taking of drugs in sport.

Mr. Moynihan

I announced on 8 July a major review of the misuse of drugs in sport. This I am undertaking personally with the assistance of Sebastian Coe, deputy chairman of the Sports Council. I am determined to see every possible step taken to stamp out drug abuse in sport and I hope the review will help in bringing this about.

66. Mr. Livingstone

asked the Secretary of State for the Environment what estimates are available to him of the number of people taking drugs and other illegal substances in British sport.

Mr. Moynihan

No estimates are available of the number of people taking drugs and other illegal substances in British sport. Not all substances banned by the International Olympic Committee are illegal; some are available on prescription or in over-the-counter preparations. The drug control and teaching centre conducted 2545 tests in 1986; there were 28 adverse findings.
