Mr. Adely

asked the Secretary of State for Scotland, for each of the last 10 years in Scotland, what percentage of (a) newly constructed houses and (b) renovation of older houses has been undertaken by local authorities and what percentage by private developers.

Lord James Douglas-Hamilton

The table shows the percentage of new dwellings completed in each of the last 10 years by local authorities and by the private sector.

New dwellings completed in Scotland, per cent, of total dwellings completed in year.

1977 33.4 44.4
1978 26.0 56.1
1979 20.0 63.8

No information is available about the extent of renovation undertaken by private developers or individuals without the aid of a grant. The information available centrally about grants paid to private owners does not distinguish between owner occupiers and private developers for every year in the series.
