HC Deb 15 July 1987 vol 119 cc472-3W
Mr. Galbraith

asked the Secretary of State for Employment what plans he has for the future of bridge programmes; and if he will make a statement.

Mr. Cope

The funding by the Manpower Services Commission of a distinct bridge programme for unemployed executives and managers was withdrawn from the end of March 1987 as part of a wider redevelopment of resources to provide more help for the long-term unemployed. The commission is, however, continuing to provide similar assistance through other schemes.

Training in job hunting skills, similar to that previously offered by bridge courses, will continue to be available within the commission's job training scheme and jobclubs for those who have been unemployed for at least 26 weeks.

For executives and managers with shorter periods of unemployment, the commission is arranging to provide possibilities for equivalent help through its wider opportunities training programme.
