HC Deb 12 January 1987 vol 108 c1W
64. Mr. Beith

asked the Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs what is his policy towards relieving the debt burden of Third world countries.

67. Mr. Wareing

asked the Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs if he has any new proposals for the reduction of the debt burden of developing countries.

Mr. Chris Patten

We believe that both creditor and debtor countries have a role to play in tackling the debt problem. Creditor countries need to promote sustained growth in the world economy, while maintaining open markets. Individual debtor countries need to adjust their economies, supported by the necessary external finance. With others, we will continue to play an active part in seeking to increase the flow of resources to debtor countries in support of adjustment.
