HC Deb 12 January 1987 vol 108 c16W
29. Mr. Norris

asked the Secretary of State for Transport what has been the effect of the increase in maximum lorry weights to 38 tonnes.

Mr. Peter Bottomley

We estimate that the extra capacity of 38 tonne vehicles allowed road transport needs in 1985 to be met with 5,000 fewer lorries, 250 million fewer vehicle miles and between 2 and 3 per cent. less road damage.
