§ Mr. Ashleyasked the Secretary of State for Education and Science when he intends to make an order relating to sections 47(5)(a)(iii) and 47(7) of the Education (No. 2) Act 1986 concerning corporal punishment in schools.
§ Mrs. RumboldMy right hon. Friend intends to make regulations under section 47(5)(a)(iii) well in advance of the 1987–88 school year. He has no present plans to make regulations under section 47(7).
§ Mr. Ashleyasked the Secretary of State for Education and Science how many pupils fall under sections 47(6)(a), 47(6)(b) and 47(6)(c) of the Education (No. 2) Act 1986 concerning corporal punishment; and how many schools have one or more pupils who are covered by these categories.
§ Mrs. RumboldAbout 33,000 pupils at 234 schools in England and Wales are likely to come within the terms of section 47(6)(a). Under section 47(6)(b) we expect that there will be some 500 pupils at the five music and ballet schools in England; the number of pupils placed in independent schools by local education authorities at 27W January 1985, the latest date for which information is available, was about 15,000. The Department has no information about the number of pupils or schools coming within the scope of section 47(6)(c).
