HC Deb 10 February 1987 vol 110 c193W
23. Mr. Livsey

asked the Secretary of State for Social Services how many fatalities resulting from hypothermia have been reported since 10 January; and if he will make a statement.

Mrs. Currie

The provisional number of deaths registered with any mention of hypothermia on the death certificate, irrespective of whether it did or did not appear as the underlying cause of death, from 10 January 1987 to 30 January 1987 in England and Wales is 87.

26. Mr. Alton

asked the Secretary of State for Social Services if he will give the latest estimate of the number of cases of hypothermia among elderly people during the recent cold weather.

Mrs. Currie

Provisional figures from the Registrar General for England and Wales show that between 10 January and 30 January 1987 hypothermia was mentioned on 80 death certificates for persons aged 65 years or more.

Information on the incidence of morbidity due to hypothermia is not available centrally.
