§ 59. Mr. Yeoasked the Secretary of State for the Home Department what recent representations he has received regarding policy towards minimum and maximum sentences.
§ Mr. MellorWe receive many letters about sentencing policy; some suggest the alteration of existing maxima; others propose the introduction of minimum sentences. As my hon. Friend knows, we consider the existing maxima to be generally satisfactory. In our view statutory minimum sentences would be an injustifiable interference with judicial discretion.
