asked the Secretary of State for the Home Department how many black prison officers there are; and how many black governors.

The ethnic origin of civil servants is monitored by voluntary self-classification. The response from prison officers has been insufficient to provide accurate information.

asked the Secretary of State for the Home Department how many full-time women prison officers are employed in prisons in England and Wales.

On 1 January 1987 there were 1,060 women employed full time in the prison officer class in prisons in England and Wales.

asked the Secretary of State for the Home Department how many auxiliary women prison officers are employed in prisons in England and Wales.

Mr. Mellor

On 1 January 1987 there were 77 women employed as prison auxiliaries in prisons in England and Wales.
