Dr. Godman

asked the Secretary of State for Scotland if he will publish a table in the Official Report showing the cost of teachers' salaries in Scotland as a proportion of total expenditure on education in each year since 1978–79 and the amount spent by local education authorities on books and equipment over the same period at 1985–86 prices.

The available information is shown in the table, which has been compiled from local authority financial returns. The figures refer to nursery, primary, secondary and special schools.
