Dr. Godman

asked the Secretary of State for Scotland what information he has about the number of children in (a) Greenock and Port Glasgow, (b) Strathclyde and (c) Scotland resident with a one-parent family.

The 1981 census showed that the numbers of children in households consisting of one adult and one or more children under 16 were as follows:

(a) the localities of Greenock and Port Glasgow 1,361
(b) Strathclyde 34,693
(c) Scotland 70,666

The information at (b) is contained in volume 1, table 38 of the 1981 census report for Strathclyde region and that at (c) in volume 1, table 38 of the 1981 census Scottish summary report, copies of which are in the Library.

asked the Secretary of State for Scotland what information he has as to the number of households in Greenock and Port Glasgow which are one-parent families; and if he is able to disaggregate the figures to show how many of them are (i) divorced mothers, (ii) separated mothers, (iii) unmarried mothers, (iv) divorced fathers and (v) widowed mothers.

The 1981 census showed that in the localities of Greenock and Port Glasgow there were '719 households containing one adult and one or more children under 16. Of the adults, 87 were male and 632 were female. There are no figures readily available by marital status.

asked the Secretary of State for Scotland if he will indicate the number of one-parent families in Greenock and Port Glasgow in (a) 1980, (b) 1981, (c) 1982, (d) 1983, (e) 1984 and (f) 1985 where the head of the household was unemployed.

The 1981 census showed that in the localities of Greenock and Port Glagow there were 79 households consisting of one adult and one or more children aged under 16, in which the adult, though economically active, was out of employment the week before the census. There are no figures available for the other years.
