HC Deb 02 February 1987 vol 109 c475W
Mr. Hoyle

asked the Secretary of State for the Home Department, pursuant to his reply to the hon. Member for Warrington, North on 26 January, Official Report, column 20, why he is unable to distinguish the cost of (a) police overtime, (b) the helicopter used to transport Myra Hindley, (c) security for Myra Hindley and (d) transport for each police force involved; what costs were incurred other than those of the police service; and if he will make a statement.

Mr. Douglas Hogg

The £12,000 to which I referred in my earlier reply on 26 January at column 358, represents the cost of overtime for the 135 police officers involved in the operation. No charge was made for the use of the Metropolitan police helicopter. The cost of providing security for Miss Hindley is included in the cost of the police officers involved and cannot be separately identified. The cost of transport for each police force involved is not readily available and could only be obtained at disproportionate cost. In addition to police service costs, the prison service incurred additional costs of about £90 representing the cost of overtime for the two prison officers who escorted Miss Hindley.
