Mr. Dobson

To ask the Secretary of State for Northern Ireland what is the latest figure for the number of staff presently employed in the press and public relations office of his Department; and what is the number planned to be employed at this point in 1988.

Dr. Mawhinney

[holding answer 17 December 1987]: The number of staff currently employed in the information service is as follows:

Northern Ireland Office (London) Northern Ireland Office (Belfast) and Northern Ireland Departments
Information Officer Grades 3 16
Clerical and Secretarial Support Staff 3 15

There are no plans at present for change in staff levels.

To ask the Secretary of State for Northern Ireland what is the latest figure for the estimated spending in 1987–88 by his Department on(a) television advertising, (b) radio advertising, (c) newspaper advertising and (d) other promotional material; and what are the estimated expenditures in each area for 1988–89.

Dr. Mawhinney

[holding answer 17 December 1987]: The total figures for all forms of advertising in the Northern Ireland Departments in 1987–88 is estimated at £3,373,848. For 1988–89 estimated spending, detailed decisions on expenditure by media have not yet been taken but we expect the overall publicity figure to be £3,616,000.

To ask the Secretary of State for Northern Ireland what is the latest figure for the estimated expenditure by his Department on press and public relations for(a) 1987–88 and (b) 1988–89.
