§ Mr. SheermanTo ask the Secretary of State for Transport (1) if he has any plans to increase provision of roadside rest and refreshment facilities with suitable hard-standing areas necessary for heavy goods vehicle parking on non-motorway trunk routes;
(2) if he has any plans to increase provision of roadside rest and refreshment facilities on non-motorway trunk routes.
§ Mr. Peter BottomleyI refer the hon. Member to the reply given to my hon. Friend the Member for Mid-Worcestershire (Mr. Forth) on 1 July, at column88, about the development of new service areas on motorways and other trunk roads.
Informal discussions have already taken place with the Association of County Councils on ways of securing more services on all-purpose trunk roads where they are needed. We intend now to consult all the main local authority associations concerned and representatives of the private sector. Provision of services on all-purpose trunk roads, including services for heavy goods vehicles, is primarily for the private sector within the framework of local planning policies.
