To ask the Secretary of State for Social Services what has been the change in the number of beds in(a) Yorkshire regional health authority and (b) the Pontefract district health authority for each year since 1982, including whatever data are available for 1987.

The available information is given in the table. The number of in-patient cases treated by Yorkshire regional health authority has increased by 15.7 per cent. from 454,013 in 1982 to 525,296 in 1986. The numbers of such cases treated by Pontefract district health authority has also increased by 14.1 per cent. over the same period from 19,945 to 22,765.
