To ask the Secretary of State for Social Services what is the basis of reimbursement of incurred expenses, or the payment of fees or salaries to(a) chairpersons and (b) vice-chairpersons, of regional and district health authorities and (c) chairpersons of family practitioner committees, in England; and if he will make a statement.

Chairmen of regional and district health authorities in England are entitled to receive remuneration of £11,259 per annum. From 1 April 1988 remuneration of £5,000 per annum will be available to chairmen of family practitioner committees. Vice-chairmen are not paid but along with chairmen and other members can claim travel and subsistence allowance in accordance with the National Health Service and English and Welsh National Boards for Nursing, Midwifery and Health Visiting (Travelling Allowances, Etc) Determination 1983 at current rates. Hospitality allowances of £1,250 and £1,000 per annum are available to chairmen of regional and district health authorities, respectively. Chairmen of family practitioner committees have an available hospitality allowance of £125 per annum.
