To ask the Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs if he will make a statement on violations of human rights in the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics over the past 12 months.

I refer my hon. Friend the the answer that I gave to my hon. Friend the Member for Mid-Worcestershire (Mr. Forth) on 24 July. We monitor the human rights situation in the Soviet Union closely and regularly raise these questions, including individual cases, with the Soviet authorities. Human rights will be on the agenda of the discussions to be held during Mr. Gorbachev's brief visit to the United Kingdom on 7 December.
