HC Deb 02 December 1987 vol 123 c636W
Sir John Biggs-Davison

To ask the Secretary of State for Northern Ireland what is his policy towards the future of the Anglo-Irish Agreement, in the light of the opinion of the chairman of the Northern Ireland Economic Council, Sir Charles Carter, on the Anglo-Irish Agreement contained in the publication "Two Years of Peace, Stability and Reconciliation?", a copy of which has been sent to him; and if he will make a statement.

Mr. Tom King

The objectives for which we signed the agreement remain valid, and it is important to continue to pursue them. Further progress towards peace, stability and reconciliation in Northern Ireland will, in part, depend on the willingness of constitutional politicians to engage, irrespective of their attitudes to the agreement in renewed dialogue about the future government of the Province, Sir Charles Carter's pamphlet makes a constructive contribution to such debate.
