HC Deb 01 December 1987 vol 123 c541W
Mr. Colvin

To ask the Minister of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food if in the light of the risk to the United Kingdom's swine fever-free status, he will impose an immediate ban on the import of pigmeat.

Mr. Donald Thompson

[holding reply 26 November 1987]No. A unilateral ban on imports is not justified and would be illegal under European Community law. Trade in pigmeat is subject to detailed veterinary conditions and, following pressure from the Government, strengthened European Community rules on classical swine fever controls were adopted in September.
