§ Mr. Donald Thompson[holding answer 30 November 1987]Carcases of sheep that are slaughtered as part of the monitoring programme are buried by Cumbria county council under arrangements approved by the radiochemical inspectorate (now Her Majesty's Inspectorate of Pollution). Sheep in the restricted area that die of natural or unexplained causes cannot be disposed of by farmers to knackers' yards but either have to be buried or cremated on their own land or, where this is not possible, buried by Cumbria county council under similar arrangements to those above.
