HC Deb 23 April 1987 vol 114 cc683-4W
Mr. Frank Cook

asked the Secretary of State for Transport how many enforcement officers are engaged by the Northern traffic commissioners to monitor the running of public transport provision within its areas; and how many such enforcement officers are allocated to Cleveland county traffic area.

Mr. David Mitchell

The Newcastle office of the northeastern traffic area has nine traffic examiners to serve the various enforcement needs of the Department and to assist the traffic commissioner in carrying out his functions; four of these examiners are permanently based in Darlington and their responsibilities include the county of Cleveland. In addition the traffic commissioner can use the traffic area office administrative staff to support him in his statutory duties.

Mr. Frank Cook

asked the Secretary of State for Transport what is the total number of reports on public transport operation within the Northern traffic region submitted by enforcement officers since effective deregulation; and how many such reports relate to public bus services within the Cleveland county traffic area.

Mr. David Mitchell

The Transport Act 1985 does not require formal reporting on public transport services. Where complaints are received by a traffic commissioner it is for him to decide whether any further investigation or action is called for. Any resulting reports to him by his staff are confidential.
