§ Lord Dean of Beswickasked Her Majesty's Government:
Whether they will publish the monthly figures of job losses in the manufacturing industries for 1986 and the first two months of this year, providing a breakdown by industry; and
Whether they will publish the monthly figures of jobs created in the manufacturing industries for 1986 and the first two months of this year, providing a breakdown by industry.
§ The Secretary of State for Employment (Lord Young of Graffham)There are no figures for job losses and job gains. For each of the industries and dates specified, the following table provides the net increases or decreases in the numbers of employees in employment compared with the previous month's estimate.
Some of the decreases in the figures will be the result of the reclassification of jobs such as Industrial Cleaning, Catering, Computer Services and Road Haulage, previously done by manufacturer's own employees and now done by sub-contractors. This developing feature of our economy has the effect of exaggerating the extent of the move from manufacturing to service sector employment.
Figures for February 1987 are not yet available.
