HL Deb 08 April 1987 vol 486 cc1104-5WA
Lord Williams of Elvel

asked Her Majesty's Government:

What is the status of the Office of Fair Trading discussion paper issued in August 1986 entitled A General Duty to Trade Fairly and what action they propose when the process of consultation on the paper has been completed.

Lord Lucas of Chilworth

A General Duty to Trade Fairly is an Office of Fair Trading discussion paper issued to promote debate on the case for and against a statutory general duty to trade fairly in transactions between traders and consumers. I understand that it is the intention of the Director General of Fair Trading to consider what recommendations should be made to the Secretary of State for Trade and Industry in the light of responses received.

I look forward with interest to studying and considering any recommendations that may be made in due course.
