HC Deb 04 November 1986 vol 103 c430W
Mr. Parry

asked the Secretary of State for Defence how many members of the Gurkha Regiment are based in Hong Kong at the latest date.

Mr. Stanley

On 31 August there were about 5,000 Gurkhas stationed in Hong Kong, including trainees.

Mr. Parry

asked the Secretary of State for Defence how many Gurkha soldiers served in Hong Kong since 1956 to 1986; and how many have been dismissed the service.

Mr. Stanley

Some 29,000 Gurkha soldiers have served in Hong Kong since 1956. Of these, a total of 156 men since 1980 have been dismissed or discharged on disciplinary grounds while serving in Hong Kong. This includes the 110 members of 1st/7th Gurkha Rifles discharged in August this year. Records kept prior to 1980 do not specify location at time of discharge.

Mr. Parry

asked the Secretary of State for Defence how many Gurkha soldiers have been dismissed from Her Majesty's forces since 1956.

Mr. Stanley

Since 1956, 369 Gurkha soldiers have been dismissed or discharged on disciplinary grounds from Her Majesty's forces.
