HC Deb 22 May 1986 vol 98 c284W
Dr. Roger Thomas

asked the Secretary of State for Wales where are the nearest radiation monitoring stations to south-west Wales which monitor the levels of radioactivity in milk, rainwater and general background.

Mr. Mark Robinson

Levels of radioactivity in milk are routinely sampled near Carmarthen. However, following the Chernobyl incident, monitoring for radioactive contamination in milk was undertaken throughout Wales on a daily basis. In south-west Wales samples were taken from creameries at Llangadog, Felinfach and Whitland and from individual farms at Aberystwyth, Carmarthen and Brawdy. Rainwater is sampled at Milford Haven. Measurement of the natural gamma ray background has been undertaken by NRPB in virtualy every accessible 10 km square in south-west Wales as throughout Great Britain.
