asked the Prime Minister how much was spent by each Government Department in each of the last two years on (a) internal research and (b) external research, including the research councils; and what proportion each figure represents of the total spending of each Department.

Notes:

(i) The DES also supports expenditure on R and D by the research councils and other bodies through the science budget. The Research Council element of the science budget amounted to £530 millions in 1984–85.

(ii) Additionally, the DES funds research activity in the universities from the block grants of the UGC. It is estimated that this amounted to £566 millions in 1984–85.

(iii) The UKAEA intramural and extramural expenditure amounted to £360.9 million and £18.9 million, of which approximately half was funded by the Department of Energy.

(iv) Data on Government funded R and D are contained in the "Annual Review of Government Funded Research and Development", published by the Cabinet Office.
