Notes:

  1. (i) The DBS also supports expenditure on R and D by the research councils and other bodies through the science budget. The Research Council element of the science budget amounted to £499 millions in 1983–84.
  2. (ii) Additionally the DES funds research activity in the universities from the block grants of the UGC. It is estimated that this amounted to £511 million in 1983–84.
  3. (iii) The UKAEA intramural and extramural expenditure amounted to £363.1 million and £31.6 million, of which approximately half was funded by the Department of Energy.
  4. (iv) Data on Government funded R and D are contained in the "Annual Review of Government Funded Research and Development", published by the Cabinet Office.
