§ Mr. Leightonasked the Attorney-General (1) if he will institute proceedings for dangerous driving against the driver of the lorry, registration number 677 XPG, who, on the evening of 12 March at Wapping drove through a line of police into the audience of a public meeting causing injuries; and if he will make a statement;
(2) if the Director of Public Prosecutions will request a police report into offences arising from the circumstances in which, at Wapping on the evening of 12 March, a lorry was driven through a line of police and into a meeting being held there by the right hon. Member for Bethnal Green and Stepney (Mr. Shore) and the hon. Members for Newham, North East (Mr. Leighton), for Easington and for Kingston upon Hull, East (Mr. Prescott); and if he will make a statement.
§ The Attorney-GeneralI understand that the Metropolitan police are making inquiries into the incident to which the hon. Member refers. It is for the police to decide whether to prosecute the driver involved in the incident. They may seek advice either from the Metropolitan police solicitors department or the Director of Public Prosecutions, but the director will not be requiring the police to submit a report to him. I am not aware of any circumstances which require my intervention in this matter.
