HC Deb 12 March 1986 vol 93 cc525-6W
Mr. Chope

asked the Secretary of State for Social Services whether he will set out the income of the National Health Service in England and Wales derived directly from patients and indirectly from insurance companies, in respect of treatment to accident victims in each of the last five years.

Mr. Whitney

Payments under sections 154 and 155 of the Road Traffic Act 1972 are due from the owners or users of vehicles, or their insurers, and not from patients as such. The annual accounts of health authorities record income from this source in total only. The totals for England and Wales are:

£'000
1980–81 2,887
1981–82 4,434
1982–83 6,210
1983–84 7,224
1984–85 7,631
