HC Deb 23 June 1986 vol 100 cc38-9W
Mr. Kirkwood

asked the Secretary of State for the Home Department if he has any plans to introduce legislation to reduce the number of parliamentary seats (a) in Scotland or (b) in the rest of the United Kingdom; and if he will make a statement.

Mr. Mellor

We have no present plans for legislation. We are expecting the Home Affairs Committee to report later this year on the results of its inquiry into the rules governing the redistribution of seats laid down in the House of Commons (Redistribution of Seats) Acts. The Government will naturally give full consideration to any recommendations it may make on these or other aspects of the law.
