Mr. Austin Mitchell

asked the Secretary of State for the Home Department (1) what is the Government's current policy towards Sunday trading;

(2) whether the Government are prepared to support the partial deregulation of Sunday trading;

(3) what consideration the Government have given to partial deregulation of Sunday trading.

Mr. Mellor

In the light of recent events, the Government have no present plans for further legislation on this matter. We shall consider carefully any workable proposals for partial deregulation which al tract widespread support.
