Mr. Parry

asked the Secretary of State for Northern Ireland if he will make a statement on the security situation in the Province.

Mr. Scott

Since 1 July there have been seven deaths in incidents arising from the security situation in the Province. Three of those killed were civilians, two were members of the Regular Army, one was a member of the UDR and one was a police officer.

In their continuing effforts to prevent terrorist activity the police have so far this year charged 404 people with serious offences. This includes six charged with murder. In the same period 129 weapons, 16,279 rounds of ammunition and 1,498 lbs of explosives have been recovered.

Mr. Austin Mitchell

asked the Secretary of State for Northern Ireland whether he will institute inquiries into the allegations about security in Northern Ireland contained in a letter recently sent to him by the hon. Member for Great Grimsby about the case of James Wallace.

My right hon. Friend has received no such letter from the hon. Member.
