HC Deb 25 July 1986 vol 102 cc654-5W
Mr. Dubs

asked the Secretary of State for Northern Ireland in which of the last five financial years grants have been made to the Rothmans cigarette factory at Carrickfergus; whether any of these moneys are now repayable to the Government on the closure of the factory; what restrictions there are on the Rothmans company selling plant and machinery purchased with grant aid or transferring such plant and machinery to manufacturing units elsewhere in the United Kingdom and abroad.

Dr. Boyson

Grants have been paid in each of the years 1981–1982 to 1985–86 and have amounted in total to £3.249 million. Some £144,000 is now repayable, being grant in respect of machinery which had been in use for less than four years on the date of closure of the Carrickfergus factory. There are no restrictions on the sale of grant-aided machinery which has been in use by Rothmans for more than four years.
