HC Deb 25 July 1986 vol 102 c616W
Mr. D. E. Thomas

asked the Secretary of State for Trade and Industry when he expects his Department's study on the role of industry in civil defence to be completed; and when it will he published.

Mr. Peter Morrison

It is hoped that substantial progress will be made with this work over the next year. By its nature such work will remain subject to updating and review. The exercise is necessarily confidential, and its results will not be published.

Mr. D. E. Thomas

asked the Secretary of State for Trade and Industry if he will describe the terms of reference of his forthcoming study on the role of industry in civil defence; and if he will name those individuals and organisations which have been consulted.

Mr. Peter Morrison

The study involves an assessment of the essential requirements which industry would be called upon to supply for civil defence purposes in a period of crisis or war, and industry's capacity to meet them. As well as consultation with other Government Departments, confidential discussions with parts of industry are planned.
