HC Deb 21 July 1986 vol 102 cc37-8W
Mr. Knox

asked the Secretary of State for the Home Department how many cases of rape were reported in the last three years; and what was the number of convictions for rape in this period.

Mr. Mellor

Annual numbers of offences of rape recorded by the police were published most recently in table 5 of Home Office statistical bulletin issue 4/86. Information on persons found guilty of rape is published annually in "Criminal Statistics, England and Wales, Supplementary Tables" (table S4.1(A) of the issue for 1984) under offence classification 19; this information is not yet available for 1985. The figures for rape include some offences other than under section 1 of the Sexual Offences Act 1956, including offences of aiding and abetting and attempts.

Mrs. Dunwoody

asked the Secretary of State for the Home Department how many rape offences were reported to the police in 1985 and 1986; and how many have been cleared up.

Mr. Mellor

A total of 1,842 offences of rape were recorded by the police in England and Wales in 1985; 1,177 offences of rape were cleared up. These figures have been published in table 5 of Home Office statistical bulletin issue No. 4/86. A total of 465 offences of rape were recorded in the first quarter of 1986; figures for the second quarter are not yet available. Details of offences cleared up are collected centrally only annually and so no information is yet available for 1986.
