§ Mr. MellorAnnual numbers of offences of rape recorded by the police were published most recently in table 5 of Home Office statistical bulletin issue 4/86. Information on persons found guilty of rape is published annually in "Criminal Statistics, England and Wales, Supplementary Tables" (table S4.1(A) of the issue for 1984) under offence classification 19; this information is not yet available for 1985. The figures for rape include some offences other than under section 1 of the Sexual Offences Act 1956, including offences of aiding and abetting and attempts.

§ Mr. MellorA total of 1,842 offences of rape were recorded by the police in England and Wales in 1985; 1,177 offences of rape were cleared up. These figures have been published in table 5 of Home Office statistical bulletin issue No. 4/86. A total of 465 offences of rape were recorded in the first quarter of 1986; figures for the second quarter are not yet available. Details of offences cleared up are collected centrally only annually and so no information is yet available for 1986.
