HC Deb 07 July 1986 vol 101 c30W
Mr. MacKenzie

asked the Secretary of State for Scotland how many jobs have been lost and how many have been created in the Glasgow travel-to-work area since May 1979.

Mr. Rifkind

Comprehensive information on jobs lost and jobs created is not available. There were 79,022 redundancies affecting 10 or more employees notified to jobcentres in the Glasgow travel-to-work area since 1 May 1979. In the period 1 May 1979 to 31 May 1986, 17,780 new jobs and 18,180 safeguarded jobs were associated with offers of regional selective assistance made to businesses in the Glasgow travel-to-work area. In the period to 31 May 1986, 9,400 jobs were associated with offers of new regional development grant It should be noted that some projects received both types of assistance.
