asked the Secretary of State for Scotland what advantages to the Scottish economy he envisages from participation in the strategic defence initiative.

Those contracts, gained by Scottish firms and institutions as a result of participation in the strategic defence initiative research programme, will provide an additional boost to the Scottish economy and an enhancement to our national technological base. The contracts will also help to maintain the availability of skilled manpower resources in Scotland to undertake work in other military and civilian-related fields.
