HL Deb 14 January 1986 vol 469 c1065WA
Lord Kennet

asked Her Majesty's Government:

How soon the Food and Agriculture Organisation (FAO) study of fish stocks in the area encompassed by a 200-mile zone round the Falkland Islands is likely to be completed, and whether they will, at the same time as the FAO study, make preparations so that a conservation and management regime may be established and enforced with the minimum of delay after the study has been completed.

Baroness Young

The Food and Agriculture Organisation study relates to fish stocks and the impact of fishing across a wide area of the South-West Atlantic. Its outcome will depend on various factors, in particular the co-operation offered by the governments involved. We have urged them to participate fully, so that the study might lead on without delay to the discussion and establishement of multilaterial conservation and management arrangements. We are also studying actively what form these arrangements could best take.
